Alexandria Seaport Foundation

Education Through Application

The Alexandria Seaport Foundation’s Apprentice Program teaches technical skills and project management techniques through the immersive experience of traditional boat building and carpentry. Apprentices work alongside experienced woodworkers, carpenters, boat builders, and mentors.

The skills learned throughout the apprenticeship program are designed to serve the students throughout the remainder of their personal and professional lives.

I first met the foundation before I became a full time professional photographer and booked a shoot with them for my first day of independent employment. I was welcomed into a bustling creative environment filled with a tight knit family of volunteers and apprentices.

The Foundation has since relocated their workshop from a large warehouse facility to an intimate floating building moored on the Alexandria, Virginia side of the Potomac River. I have made a number of visits to the Foundation over the years to create imagery that tells their story.
